MFD Shootout
Buying
an MFD
Heres what you need to look out for when evaluating
an MFD. By Prashant L Rao
Leaving
a greener imprint
Green printing has become a full-fledged agenda for the printer
vendors today, who are leaving no stone unturned in taking
it to the corporate world, writes Nivedan Prakash
MFD Reviews
Brother
MFC 7840N
Installation was simple and the single toner cartridge assembly
slid into place very easily like a charm. Configuring the
MFD was easiest of the lot and was possible without connecting
it to a PC
Brother
MFC 7450
It's a monochrome Laser MFD but a compact machine with nothing
to write home about expect for the fact that installation
was simple and quick and the single toner cartridge assembly
slid into easily
Canon
imageCLASS MF 4370 dn
This imageCLASS MF4370dn is a monochrome MFD that is a true
all purpose solution for offices and is a clear winner on
most counts. The installation was quick and was ready to action
in less than we thought
Canon
imageCLASS MF 4680
Canon MF 4680 scored well on copying a complex document but
lost out on account of price. It printed a complex document
at 17 ppm and scored 15 ppm for plain test
HP
LaserJet M1522nf
The M1522nf scored high on the plain text test and was the
fastest of the bunch when it came to copying but it lost out
on account of a paucity of features such as an energy saver
button, auto duplex, password protecting printouts and was
the second slowest when it came to printing a complex document
Ricoh
Aficio SP1100SF
It is a monochrome MFD that can print and copy at the same
speed of 13 ppm and it was the cheapest laser MFD in this
shootout
Canon
PIXMA MX868
The biggest advantage this printer had was photo printing
and memory card reader, which is a plus. Its warm up time
was clocked 62 seconds and it took 100 seconds in the color
copy test.
HP
Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless
For a relatively bulky MFD that takes about five minutes to
warm up, the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless is a snappy performer
when it comes to printing out both complex documents and plain
text
Ricoh
Aficio SP C232SF
The SP C232SF had an unusually friendly design. The control
panel was uncluttered and easy to understand. The footprint
was relatively small because the toner cartridges nestle in
the center of the unit (accessible through the output tray)
How
we tested
We put these devices to the test in terms of printing both
simple and complex documents, copying complex documents and
checked out the remaining features. By Prashant L Rao
