Day 3/Session

New efficiencies are emerging

Microsoft talked about its upcoming launches of Windows 7, Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010 in what was quite an interactive session

It was intriguing to find out that Microsoft had invested $9.5 billion on R&D during the year 2007-08, which is likely to scale up going forward with more products emerging. Seeing a good progress with customers using Microsoft tools, Ramesh G, Director, Windows Client, Microsoft Corporation (I) Pvt., Ltd., is in the launching spree of Windows 7, Windows server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010. These tools as Ramesh observed enables users to increase their productivity anywhere be it at the desk, branch or during the move, enhance security & control protecting data and PCs performing network access protection, while securing the corporate environment. Streamlining management through virtualization, flexible deployment, in-cloud versus on premise are some of the features.

According to Ramesh, Windows 7 improves branch performance in a distributed mode, through hosted caching which could witness potential cost savings. The savings could be around VPN client with Rs 500 per PC, full volume encryption of hard drives and portable drives to an extent of Rs 2,000-Rs 4,000, backup and restore saving about Rs 2,000 per PC , besides savings on power management, NAP and so on. “With varied functionalities embedded in it, the cost savings would be about 50% in hardware, free migration cost and others,” said Ramesh.

From an investment standpoint, Microsoft has made a $10 million on releasing Windows 7 after embedding varied features based on the feedback received during its beta test.

Windows Server 2008 R2 has been another technology investment area as Ramesh observed where the initiatives like virtualization, management and web based on ASP.Net on server core were taken up. Scalability and reliability factors dominated these enterprise workloads as Ramesh pointed.

The Exchange Server 2010 launch has been a great moment for Ramesh which was the outcome of a $ 6 million investment driving optimization for software and services besides having greater accessibility, availability, flexibility while adhering to protection and compliance.

Ramesh maintained that the feedback has been that with the use of Windows 7, the IT staff efficiency gains have been around 20%.
