Day 2/ Session

Uninterrupted Life

Vijayanand S, Vice President & SBU head - Industrial Batteries Division, Amara Raja Batteries Ltd talked about a critical link in enterprise networks, viz., the UPS battery

Vijayanand started off by posing the question, “Why is back up storage power critical?”. His point was that all visible elements in an enterprise IT set-up are rendered invalid if power in quantity or quality is unavailable leading to humongous losses. So what is a CIO to do? What kind of batteries should he or she get to ensure that nothing untoward happens? Vijayanand talked about Amaron Quanta, Amara Raja’s UPS battery product that according to him has the virtues of Longer Life and features a patented heavy duty lead alloy, thick intercell connections and thereby offers 30%-40% higher service life than a conventional UPS battery. According to Vijayanand, Amaron Quanta’s attributes are that it is highly reliable, best in class design, world-class manufacturing infrastructure and stringent quality control. Thanks to this, Quanta has an incredibly low warranty return rate of 0.50%. The other metrics are equally favorable with performance linked failures standing at 0.06% while, as per Vijayanand, most other brands had a failure rate in the region of 3.0-4.5% and imported batteries had a failure rate of as high as 10%.

The proof of the pudding lies in the eating. Quanta powers some critical installations in the country including large IT Companies across India, the National Stock Exchange, the Apollo Hospital Chain, Telecom Main Switch Centers, the Antarctica Expedition, and your neighborhood Bank or Post Office. One in every three BTS towers in telecom is powered by Amara Raja, he stated. Two out of every three Main Switch centers of all telecom operators are powered by Amara Raja.

The low impedance path, instantaneous high currents, superior high rate discharge performance that is 5-8% better than that of rectilinear grids, a patented Instacharge Paste recipe combine to deliver superior performance with excellent charge acceptance and low self discharge. The cost of extra power that is required to recharge the battery through its life can be to the extent of 25-35% of its initial cost, he added.

Although the need for after sales support will be limited, he said, “We are still prepared for even the remotest possibility with a nationwide network of channel partners and offices.” The company has a single response number, 1 800 425 BATT. It has a battery monitoring system called BATMON that enables the live checking of batteries without having to shut down the system.
