Enterprise Backup Software

The root of business continuity

Backup and restore software plays an important role in any company’s IT infrastructure and SMBs cannot afford to ignore it

The backup needs of SMBs are essentially the same as those of enterprises except for the data/storage sizes but there are some important differences that should be considered. Budget and technical expertise for one are frequently strained in SMBs and an effective backup strategy must take these issues into consideration. If you look at the difference between an SMB and an enterprise, generally within an SMB’s IT department you either have fewer people or at a minimum you do not have people with specific storage specialization or storage knowledge. They would not have a dedicated person for backup and recovery, let alone for managing storage. So if they need to recover files, there is no one to go to. For such situations, an automated backup solution becomes critical. If a server crashes, clearly IT is going to do the recovery, but if a user’s files are involved, the user usually prefers to recover it by himself or herself.

SMBs would look at buying a product that is easy to use and manage. A lot of the factors change dramatically—in an SMB environment performance is not critical, but the ability to easily install software is. To be able to start the software up, make it do what it should and have it keep running is the most important factor. A backup application should protect all of your computers, support the most popular operating systems, and back up all the data necessary to restore your computer in the event of a failure. Some backup strategies protect only file servers and business-critical application servers. A complete backup strategy needs to protect servers, desktops, and notebooks, which can remain unprotected because they are often not connected to the network during scheduled daily backups.

Protection should also encompass the operating systems, device drivers, applications, application settings, and user settings on the computers in your network. When a computer fails, you should not be forced to spend countless hours locating applications files, loading application CDs, reinstalling applications, and reconfiguring settings. Backup and recovery software make it easy to recover all your applications and settings.

Many IHVs sell products that come with bundled data protection software, which automates high performance backup and recovery, from disk or tape, over unlimited distances. These also encrypt data using AES 256-bit on tape and disk, enabling companies to comply with industry and governmental regulations.
