ERP, SCM, CRM and BI are the basic building blocks that raise the efficiency of internal business processes and help businesses compete and thrive

SMBs have been using some form of financial reporting tool starting with basic accounting solutions such as Tally and Excel sheets to sophisticated off-the-shelf products from SAP, Microsoft, Oracle, Sage and others.

However, evaluating products requires planning so that you do not end up burning your fingers by deploying the wrong solution (one that does not work) or repeating the mistakes that your peers in the enterprise segment made in the past. Therefore if an SMB has a large number of transactions [financial, inventories, stocks and like] with multiple processes, a large number of suppliers or has huge customer databases that need to be mined for greater business insights on customer behaviors and analytics it can resort to ERP, SCM, CRM or BI depending upon the business requirement.

Once you have identified the need, then the next step would be to choose a vendor’s solution. Before you embark on a discussion with a vendor, insist on getting a reference of other companies in your industry that have deployed the same solution and talk to them to figure out the deliverables that they have achieved post implementation. It helps in multiple ways—rolling out a full-fledged ERP suite can take months and this will eat into your resources. Therefore, start with the core modules that are vital to your business and pilot the same within a department. If the pilot works out satisfactorily, then one can add other modules. This is safer than going in for a big-bang approach. Further, choose a vendor with solid financial credibility. This will ensure that application support does not suffer in the future as your business grows. Additionally SMBs should be watchful with the recent trend of vendor consolidation and should select or verify products that are fully integrated before embarking on implementation.

SMBs should insist on negotiating the package deal along with supporting hardware infrastructure. This helps them get a better overall price. ISVs have special schemes or bundles for EWA licenses with servers and storage for SMBs.

In the recent past some SMBs that have stabilized their investments in ERP have started looking at improving their other business processes such as optimizing their supply chain with SCM and managing warranties/quotation/dealer/supplier management using CRM. These solutions boost operational efficiency and help streamline costs. Then there is business intelligence that can help the management take informed and quick business decisions by allowing them to drill down into reports or slice and dice information to get deeper and richer insights into the business.
