Manipal University unwires Campus with a little help from Motorola

The Enterprise Mobility business of Motorola, Inc. has announced that it was selected by D-VoiS Broadband Private Ltd. to supply and deploy its indoor and outdoor wireless networking technologies at Manipal University, providing untethered Internet access to students and faculty as well as enabling high-speed wireless bridging between multiple campus buildings.

This campus-wide, high-speed wireless network will help Manipal University realize its vision of offering best-in-class educational facilities to students. This ubiquitous high-speed network will create an all-wireless education campus for nearly 14,000 users. It will enable them to access the Internet and a range of online services, anytime anywhere in the 100 buildings and the entire 5 sq km campus. Motorola is collaborating with D-VoiS Broadband Private Limited, a leading player in India’s campus wireless market, on this project.

“Motorola has extensive expertise in building seamless indoor and outdoor wireless networks for large university campuses across the globe,” said Jayant Rastogi, Country Head -Sales and Regional Sales Director - Indian Subcontinent for Motorola Enterprise Mobility business, adding, “We are pleased to share our learning from other large campus wireless deployments to help Manipal University realize their vision.”

Working with D-VoiS Broadband Private Limited, Motorola provided an end-to-end wireless solution for the Manipal University campus that includes Wi-Fi standards-based indoors wireless LAN and wireless point-to-point bridges from the MOTO Wi4 family of wireless solutions to connect multiple buildings within the campus. The network uses RFS7000 and WS51000 series WLAN Switch, industry’s only wireless LAN switch that can integrate Wi-Fi, mesh wireless, RFID and other emerging RF technologies, in combination with mesh-enabled 802.11a/b/g AP5131 and 802.11a/b/g AP300 for indoor coverage seamlessly integrated with MotoMesh access points for outdoor coverage. D-VoiS Broadband Pvt. Ltd. also realized significant savings using PTP 400 point-to-point bridges to connect multiple buildings in the campus, eliminating the need to dig trenches between buildings. The network has been designed to provide high-speed Internet access, toll-quality voice and streaming video services to

students and faculty while ensuring the highest level of security for its users. Students can access the network with ease, anywhere in the campus, login to internet and high bandwidth applications on the intranet. The access device is not restricted only to the laptops; students can use even Wi-Fi enabled mobile phones to access the internet, streaming videos etc., on the move.

According to Balakrishna Rao, Head IT, Manipal Universal Learning Pvt Ltd, “Manipal University is recognized for imparting high-quality professional education and believes in providing world-class infrastructure and facilities to the students. We chose to partner with D-VoiS and Motorola to help us establish a state-of-art facility with ubiquitous indoor and outdoor connectivity for our students and faculty.”
