TCS to set up 500 cr facility at Pune

Tata Consultancy Services has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understan-ding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government to acquire 50 acres of land for locating a state-of-the-art development facility in Hinjewadi Phase III, which is part of an MIDC-promoted Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

TCS will invest up to Rs 500 crore in the facility to create a capacity of 5,000 seats. In the long-term, there are plans to ramp-up the centre’s capacity to 10,000 seats. In addition to a software development centre, the new facility will house professionals from TCS’s R&D and engineering services groups.

According to the MoU signed by Maharashtra Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, and S Ramadorai, CEO and MD, TCS, the state government will help in acquiring land, providing infrastructural support through Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and other related agencies and pushing for a Single Window Clearance. It will be part of a SEZ and eligible for all requisite incentives as per the state’s policy.

Mumbai-headquartered TCS currently employs 19,000 professionals at various locations in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Pune. In 2006-07, TCS has plans to hire 9,000 people for its operations in Maharashtra and work on different projects for more than 100 customers on various technology platforms including Microsoft, Java, IBM, SAP, Oracle as well as services like Business Intelligence and engineering.

“Pune is emerging as a promising IT hub for companies and TCS plans to play an integral role in the development of the local economy by working with academic institutions and help train and develop talent in the region and the state,” said Ramadorai.

“Our experience suggests that efforts to develop new TCS infrastructure at various locations has resulted in overall development of the region,” he added.
