The primary aim of recruitment is to strive for an optimum
fit with the organisation. The competencies required for success in a role form
the basis of any selection. However, the perfect techno-functional fit does
not guarantee a cultural/team fit. Hence one needs to look at various other
subtle aspects. The requirements naturally change with the levels and different
businesses within an organisation.
Global mindset
At senior levels one needs to ask the question, A visionary or an operational
genius? An ideal candidate is one who is adept in long-term strategy as
well as short-term tactics. A global mindset and the aggressive pursuit of global
competitiveness are essential. Effectively managing cross-cultural, cross-organisational
and cross-disciplinary interactions is a required capability for members of
the senior leadership team.
At the middle levels one looks for managerial and people skills coupled with
strong implementation and delivery capabilities. At operational levels, its
the depth of technical capabilities and the potential to learn and upgrade to
higher roles.
Out-of-the-box thinking
This is what the market expects and requires today. In demand are candidates
who are enterprising and have a flair for creativity and innovation. The fast-paced
world we live in demands the ability to come up with new and alternative solutions
constantly.
Flexibility and adaptability
The ability to work in an ambiguous and ever-changing environment is necessary
for survival in our times. As such, interviewers look for people with a high
degree of flexibility and adaptability, and who have the ability to deliver.
Can-do attitude
The need is for people who have the ability to perform under
trying circumstances and against odds. Such candidates are self-motivated, and
are able to take setbacks in their stride and emerge winners.
Sense of humour
Keeping in mind all the above requirements, it would not
be out of place to mention a sense of humour as another desirable attribute.
This means the ability to maintain a balance and a congenial environment in
times of stress, which often makes the difference between success and failure.
