Work Culture
Fun and challenges at Trilogy
Movies, cricket matches, lunch for the family. That's only
part of what Trilogy does to keep its employees happy, says Vinutha V
Trilogy E-Business
Software India is an enterprise software provider for the automotive, communications,
computer hardware and insurance verticals, and it aims to strengthen its team
by providing rewarding career opportunities. Its HR programme has been replicated
from Trilogys Texas headquarters.
Having worked in different software companies, I know that the culture
of a company matters a lot to an employee. At Trilogy, the culture is re-emphasised
by work and action, says Samal Chandran, its senior development manager.
The main objective of the HR policy at Trilogy is to offer a fun place to employees
while meeting the companys challenges. Every HR initiative is formulated
to boost the personal growth of employees. Unlike other companies where hierarchies
are followed at all levels, Trilogy believes that every employee is a star of
the company as it employs extremely capable candidates. Says Chinnikrishna Kommi,
Trilogys managing director, We want our employees to stay with us;
to achieve the same, we have formulated appropriate HR activities. We outsource
our employees regular maintenance work (such as low-end technology activities)
to other companies so that their focus remains solely on core development work.
Company as a university
Trilogy University is an integral part of the HR initiative that focuses on
the whole recruitment process from selection to induction. It moulds new inductees
to the company. We select the best students from the IITs, NIIT and universities
across the country. We try to bring out the entrepreneurial skills of new employees
during training. We provide them an opportunity to learn about the requirements
of customers and their businesses, says Kommi. In several instances, the
prototypes developed by new employees have been well received by the company.
Staying on track
When a employee joins Trilogy, a buddy is assigned
to the new hire; the buddy helps in getting acquainted with the companys
environment. Buddies usually belong to the same team as the new entrant. It
is the responsibility of the career adviser to keep a track of the employees
path towards his career goals. In turn, every employee becomes a career adviser
at some point. In fact, every employee has a career adviser throughout his or
her tenure. Career advisers gather at the round-table to evaluate the performance
of employees, and review whether they are on track to reach their goals. In
case of any deviation, steps are offered to the employees to return to the path.
Appraisals are done twice a year at the round table based on the employees
technical contribution, leadership abilities and presence across the company.
Bubble heads
In addition to the career advice and compensation given,
if the work of the employee is not recognised, the task of HR will be incomplete,
says Kommi. Outstanding performers are known as bubble heads; a doll with the
face of the employee is awarded along with a cash prize. The number of bubble
heads on an employees table reflects the calibre of that employee. Employees
are also rewarded with Star Awards, and are taken to the US for the award ceremony.
Leadership.com is an internal portal for communication where employees can voice
their opinions, and exchange information about clients and the latest happenings
within the company. They can even put forth their problems and requirements.
The employee has direct access to the chief operating officer of the company
through this portal. Leadership.com helps eliminate gaps existing between
top management and the employees, says Amit Jain, senior associate.
Low attrition
By looking after our employees career growth, we have been able
to keep the attrition rate under five percent, says Kommi. The regular
fun activities that take place at Trilogy include daylong parties and weekend
trips. Any employee rated high in a project will be taken out for lunch or dinner
along with his or her family. As a part of the motivational schemes, employees
are also taken to movies and cricket matches.
