Speech recognition
We have been hearing about automatic speech recognition technology for quite some time now. We have seen movies where vehicles and machinery respond to voice commands. We have all heard about how this technology will change the way we live. In fact, the medical transcription business will benefit a lot from this technology as it will provide a welcome relief from the mundane job of transcription. Further, like fingerprint technology, it can prove to be good mode of security. But we haven’t seen much of this technology in real life, as Indian companies have not yet warmed to this concept. While some have already taken steps in this direction, others are still waiting on the sidelines. Indian companies need to lap up this technology soon as it can give them the much needed edge on the global IT scene.

Quality consciousness
The IT industry has proved that we Indians can be as quality conscious as any other. One complaint, which has repeatedly dogged the Indian industry, has been the lack of quality output. Due to the industry’s lackadaisical attitude in matters of quality, we have been laggards in almost every field. The importance of providing quality products and services can be seen from the success of our software industry. This adherence to the strictest quality standards should be emulated by every other Indian industry. In today’s market place it is not just about delivering products. Quality lays at the heart of a success story.

SEI CMM
More than two-thirds of the SEI CMM certified companies are from India. Companies who haven’t achieved this quality certification have been the first to discredit this certification. According to them, clients rarely if ever ask for such certifications. Many even say that Indian companies unlike their counterparts in the West don’t have an indigenous process in place and hence go in for these certifications. But one believes that such certifications have taken the Indian software industry one step further on the road to progress. And the fact that they have gone in for this certification proves that Indian companies have realised the importance of quality.

E-commerce being taxed!
E-commerce hasn’t taken off as expected. One major attraction for conducting transactions online was that it was not taxed. It is true that the government needs to earn its revenues, but the concept should be allowed to mature before being taxed. Otherwise it would kill the concept before it takes off. The government should also sort out other problems involving e-commerce before imposing taxes.
